For a new mom (or new dad!), buying a diaper bag can often be as overwhelming as buying a new car! She has to make nearly as many decisions, as there are almost as many options in diaper bags as there are when purchasing a new vehicle. The new mom has to make decisions based on both functionality and fashion. Here are a few tips to help get you started:

1. Always remember that, although the Diaper Bag carries the baby’s things, it is your Diaper Bag and not the baby’s. The Bag should reflect and enhance your personality! Make sure to pick a color and style that makes you happy and works for you. There is nothing wrong with the mother of a baby boy establishing her femininity with a beautiful pink Diaper Bag. The right Diaper Bag should not only be practical and functional, but should be a statement of who you are.

2. When I chose my first diaper bag, I wanted to pick something that my husband would also carry. This was a bad idea! He’s carried it from the table to the bathroom four or five times when one of my daughters needed a diaper change, or he would carry it out of church when I had too many things to carry. He never wore it as a diaper bag, but carried it as a man would if he were holding a woman’s purse outside of a bathroom for her. That diaper bag didn’t last long, as I soon realized choosing it based on his opinion was much like choosing a shirt he would like to also wear. The diaper bag needed to represent MY style. We eventually chose another (small) diaper bag for him that he would feel comfortable taking if he was out with the girls for longer than a few hours.

3. Decide what your organization style is. Do you like lots of pockets so you have a place for everything, or would you prefer to have more open space in the bag so you can fit more items? Is it important to you that you have insulated bottle holders and a separate compartment for a pacifier? Each of these decisions are a matter of individual preference, so think about what you would prefer. Ask a couple of friends that you feel like have the same level of organization as you. They are one of your best resources!

4. Be unique! There are so many options now for not having the same bag as every other mom. One great way is to get a monogrammed diaper bag, or a personalized diaper bag. You can choose to have you or the baby’s initials or traditional monogram put on the bag, or the baby’s name.

5. A high quality Diaper Bag can be serviceable for years. If you invest in a quality Diaper Bag, you may be able to use it long after you need it for your baby. You may be able to use it later for any number of things such as a laptop bag, an overnight bag, or a a beach bag. The possibilities are endless!

6. How do you want to carry the bag? Is it important you to have your hands free, so you would prefer a backpack diaper bag, or a stroller diaper bag? Or would you prefer to have a tote diaper bag to wear over your shoulder so you can reach in and quickly grab for whatever you need?

7. It is important to think about the closure that you want. There are many options, such as zippers, ribbon closures, magnetic snaps, or button closures. Think about your style, what you think looks best, and the pros and cons of each. Zippers keep things from spilling, but it often takes away from the amount of room you have in your bag, and they wear out quickly. Which of these things are a priority to you?

8. Think about ordering a custom diaper bag, especially if you see elements of many different bags that you like. You may like the closure of one, but prefer the fabric of another, while you appreciate the number of pockets on a completely different one. On our site, we offer the option to have a seamstress make you a custom bag, that will fit your specifications exactly.

9. Consider what size you would like the diaper bag to be. If you spend more time outside them home, they most probably you will prefer a bag which is bit bigger and has lots of room so that you can stuff it with more baby essentials. If you go out for quick trips only, a smaller one could serve your purpose just as well.

10. Don’t bother wasting money by buying an inexpensive bag from a store like Walmart. You’ll end up having to replace it, as it is poorly made, or you won’t end up using it because it doesn’t fit the needs of a new mom. The quality of a handmade bag makes the price worth it, so that it not only meets your needs, but lasts longer. All our bags are designed and made by mothers, and they really know what you are looking for in a diaper bag, so that you will never be stuck with a bag you don’t really use.
